Review of Underwriters Laboratories services is topic of Scioto Valley's November program

Pre-dinner clinic focuses on quality employment

Ms. Paulette Davis from Underwriters Laboratories in Cincinnati visited the Scioto Valley Section at its monthly dinner program meeting of Thursday, November 9, 2000. The location was the Canal House Restaurant north of Chillicothe.

The Section also conducted a pre-dinner clinic from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. The topic was "The Current Job Market for Quality Professionals -- A Recruiting Perspective" and the speaker was Ms. Terri Rowe, a recruiter with J. D. Cotter, Inc. Terri is a past officer of the Columbus Section of ASQ and currently serves as editor of the "Quality Spirit" newsletter. She has been an ardent supporter of the Scioto Valley Section from the very beginning. Terri provided an overview of current regional quality field job market conditions with emphasis on the considerations that make a prospect attractive.

Paulette Davis (standing) used videotape and PowerPoint to provide an overview of the conformity assessment services provided by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides both product safety and quality management certifications. UL is known as the largest and oldest nationally recognized testing laboratory in the United States. On a voluntary basis, manufacturers submit products in a wide variety of categories to UL for testing and safety certification, frequently to address jurisdictional laws, codes or regulations that require a product to be tested by a recognized laboratory before it can be sold in their areas. UL also registers manufacturers' quality management systems to international standards such as the ISO 9000 series.

More than 35 ASQ members and guests attended the November 9, 2000, monthly membership dinner program meeting of the ASQ Scioto Valley Section.

The Scioto Valley Section was recently recognized for its excellence in completing the necessary steps to achieve the Total Quality Level of the ASQ Section Management Program. Region 8 Director Mary Jo Mercier presented the Section's Total Quality Level certificate November 9 to Grant Germann, Vice Chair and Section Management Program Chair; and Wade Midkiff, Vice Chair and Internet Liaison, the individuals who were the Section's key participants in realizing this accomplishment.

Mary Jo attended the November program to announce Bob's advancement and to present him with a Past Chair and Fellow pin. Bob's citation reads, "For achievements in integrating and applying quality engineering concepts in aerospace, nuclear generation and high-level nuclear waste management; for nearly 35 years of service to, and promotion of, ASQ at the national, division and section levels; and for efforts to achieve recognition of quality disciplines and practitioners."
