Kefgen (rkefgen@zoomnet.net) In this Issue: MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR NOVEMBER MEETING “SIX SIGMA BEST PRACTIVES” NOVEMBER 15TH EDUCATION INFORMATION SOUGHT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR 2002 SVS ACHIEVES TOTAL QUALITY LEVEL OF SMP EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION NEW EXAMINATION SITE EXAMINATION PROCTORS NEEDED UPCOMING CONFERENCES PROGRAM SCHEDULE FOR 2001-2002 **************************************************************************** MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR November, 2001 The year is quickly winding down to a mere eight weeks of activity, such as work, meetings, holidays, shopping, parties, moments for reflection (lots of them) more meetings, family time, work, work and more work. Your quality conscious calendars should be action packed through the end of the year, with refrains of Six Sigma, Six Sigma, Six Sigma…. Looking to the November roster of events, circle your calendars for Thursday, November 15, 2001, when we will have Cheryl Molebash, National Six Sigma Coordinator from Mead Corporation, as our guest Dinner Speaker at the Mead Conference Center, in the Christoper Inn, Chilllicothe, Ohio. Review your e-mail registration form, or elsewhere within this e-mail newsletter for details on location, reservation information and timing. Please plan on attending this very special event/award Dinner Meeting. The December joint section meeting with our Columbus (parent) Section 801 will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2001, with Bill Hathaway as guest speaker. Bill’s presentation will follow up on the philosophy of Six Sigma, as a web-based educational experience. This will be an exciting and informative session as it will be presented during a live-internet feed. Mr. Hathaway’s group “MoreSteam.com” provides web-based operation learning portals, including web-based Six Sigma training to Xerox, American Standard, CNF, and others. To date, “MoreSteam” has provided web-based training to individuals in the USA, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, India, China, and Pakistan. Bill has been a senior member of ASQ since 1987, undergraduate studies at Notre Dame, Northwestern Business school and spent 10 years with Ford Motor Company. He has also held a variety of V.P. positions in manufacturing, service and logistics. So be prepared for an enlightening Six Sigma evening. The December joint section meeting is also an important one for all members concerned, as we renew our friendship with our sponsoring section, and we will also have Mr. Brian Lanning, our Nominating Committee Chair, announce 2002-2003 Section Officer Candidates. I hope to see a great turnout at both November and December Dinner Meetings. Come and enjoy. I hope you have had the opportunity to read the recent Quality Progress cover story on Ford’s venture into Six Sigma and the vast amount of resources, both human and monetary, to change the organization from within. It would be a great lead-in for your attending both the November and December Dinner Meetings. Also, I hope some of you had the opportunity to participate in the Live Chat conversation w/ ASQ President-Elect, Liz Keim, on October 31. Her conversation/presentation was on the Principles of Six Sigma and their application in a service environment. Hope you logged on! If you missed it, log onto the Six Sigma Forum/Journal Section of ASQ National Website for more Six Sigma information. Tip of the Day: An excellent (and easy to use) Six Sigma Simplified/Green Belt Training system I have used for plant level associates has been Jay Arthur’s “Six Sigma Simplified”. Review of product can be seen at www.quantum-i.com Time to compliment a few ASQ/SVS members for their recent achievements and voluntary efforts. First of all, volunteering and mentoring is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences that you, as a quality professional can partake. The Ohio Office of Quality, which produces and handles the TEPS Competition for the State of Ohio, is one such organization which yearly, seeks ASQ volunteers to help TEPS Teams prepare for statewide competition. The competition is stiff among state funded service organizations to “show off” their best and brightest problem-solving/quality improvement teams. This year, Bob Kefgen, ASQ/SVS Member and Newsletter Chair stepped in to fill this need as Team Mentor for the Ross County entry: The OPIES from Ross Country Correctional Institution. Thanks Bob!!! Hope you team wins! Kudos to George Smith, Certification and Re-certification Chair, for leading the charge on the huge task of reviewing Cert. and re-cert. journals, as well as assuring examination sessions are held. The following ASQ/SVS members were recently approved (CQA recertification) Rick, Auringer, Mark Cade, and John Shewbrooks. Congratulations to all! Be safe. Be kind. Be vigilant. Cynthia L. The Placement Chair serves as a liaison between regional industries and ASQ Scioto Valley Section members who are seeking employment opportunities in the quality field. Although the principle focus of the Placement Chair is the Section Member who is seeking a new position due to loss of employment, the Chair may also serve the Section Member with interest in a career move to a more responsible position in the quality field with enhanced opportunity for personal and professional growth. Who is the current Placement Chair? The Scioto Valley Section Placement Chair is John Cormier, Business Development Manager with the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) in Piketon. John can be reached at: E-mail: cormierje@ports.usec.com Phone: (740) 897-2423 Fax: (740) 897-2459 How is information on regional career opportunities disseminated? As new regional job opportunities in the quality field are identified, these listings are posted to the ASQ Scioto Valley Section Web Site, and are routinely published in the monthly Scioto Valley Section Newsletter. In addition, the Placement Chair has established and maintains a comprehensive network of contacts with regional recruiters and area staffing professionals who may be looking for candidates for assignments in the quality field. Personal contact with the Placement Chair may produce worthwhile leads to the prospective job seeker. The Placement Chair also maintains a confidential database containing the names of interested Scioto Valley Section Members as well as the names of regional employers who staff positions in the quality field. Interested Scioto Valley Section members may post to this confidential database at any time, or may query the regional industry data file to focus their job search. NEW EXAMINATION SITE The December 1, 2001 certification examinations will be conducted at Shawnee State University. At the present time the Ohio University, Chillicothe is being impacted by asbestos removal during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Individuals schedule to sit for the December 2001 examination will be notified of specific room arrangements by email prior to the examination date. EXAMINATION PROCTORS NEEDED In order to provide improved service to all of our members, taking future certification examinations, we are expanding the number of examination centers from one to four over the next 12 months. Our plans are to have centers in the Chillicothe, Portsmouth, Jackson and Ashland/Huntington areas. To accomplish this plan, we need to expand the number of qualified examination proctors we have from three to 5 or more. Top serve as a proctor, you have to possess a current ASQ certification in any area, and be willing to work approximately 4-5 hours each quarter. Proctors receive .5 RU for each examination they participate in, and 1.5 RU for being an active member of the SVS Certification Committee. The only limitation being, that you may not sit for any exam within 12 months of proctoring that specific exam. For example an individual planning to sit for the CQE examination may not proctor the CQE exam for 12 months prior to sitting for the examination. Examination dates for CY 2002 are: March 2, 2002 June 1, 2002 October 19, 2002 December 7, 2002 If you are interested in volunteering to become an examination proctor, please contact George Smith at gw1smith@bright.net.
