Kefgen (rkefgen@zoomnet.net) In this Issue: MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR MAY 2002 MAY MEETING–"BUILDING QUALITY COMMUNITIES"- MAY 14 10TH NATIONAL QUALITY IN EDUCATION CONFERENCE (NQEC) CERTIFICATION PREPARATORY COURSES SCHEDULE CHANGED EXAMINATION PROCTORS NEEDED COURSES / SEMINARS FROM OTHER SECTIONS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM SCHEDULE FOR 2002 **************************************************************************** MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR MAY 2002 Now that the 2nd quarter of 2002 fiscal year is underway for most member companies, it is good to see that local employers are increasing their employment rolls, calling back workers and exploring opportunities for future growth. Yes, we have the mergers of some and the uncertainty of other corporations to still bear in mind, but strategically, there has been an upswing in training and conference registrations again. This is a positive sign for those of us within the quality profession. Manufacturing and housing sectors are up which is also a positive note and the Federal Reserve is not changing any interest rates just yet (as of this writing, the day is still young though…). What does this all mean for our Section? It means ASQ memberships are up, registrations for the ASQ Quality Congress in Denver are brisk and some members I speak to on a regular basis are hurriedly working on their recertification journals for submission. Spring is good! I would like to thank Mr. Brian Lanning for hosting a great meeting on “Six Sigma Blackbelt Training” for us at OSU Piketon Center a few weeks ago. The topic was timely, well presented and judging from overall responses, made an arduous task of studying for the exam, much more plausible for all of us by example and use of Brian’s recommended study habits and materials. Our May 14, 2002 Dinner Meeting at Moyers Winery is sure to be a sellout, so register early for the Winery Tour, dinner and conversation with Dr. Cordelia Detmer, Mayor of Manchester, Ohio. Our topic of course is “Building Quality Communities” and as noted in the meeting announcement brochure (see newsletter announcement also) Dr. Detmer is quite the conversationalist, practicing MD, world traveler, champion dog breeder and as recently documented, is the only MD, Ph.D and current acting Mayor in the USA. Bring a guest, tell your local Chamber of Commerce members, Economic Development specialists, and other community and civic minded individuals about this special event. We look forward to seeing you there! Kind Regards, Cynthia L. Davis ASQ/SVS Section Chair 2001 –2002 d2associates@earthlink.com cdavis@browncorp.com MAY MEETING – –"BUILDING QUALITY COMMUNITIES" Date: 5/14/02 Location: Moyer's Winery, 3859 U. S. Route 52, Manchester, Ohio Speaker: Dr. Cordelia Detmer AGENDA: 5:00 p.m. Tour of Moyer's Winery for early arrivals 5:30 p.m. Registration 5:45 p.m. Networking 6:00 p.m. Dinner 6:45 p.m. Section business meeting 7:00 p.m. Speaker and Q&A 8:00 p.m. Departure Members and guests of the Scioto Valley Section, American Society for Quality (ASQ), will hear about "Building Quality Communities" during the local group's monthly dinner program meeting coming up on Tuesday, May 14. "Building Quality Communities" is a challenge to all of us who live, work and support the community in which we reside. One of the strategic directions of the ASQ and the focus of society president Tom Mosgaller has been to think and act systematically to create communities of quality where we live and work. In today's marketplace "great companies" need great communities, so we have to think about the whole community of quality, including health care, education, and government, and service providers. Good things can happen as a result of successful collaborations between other groups and individuals, for the good of the community at large. Dr. Cordelia Detmer, the Mayor of Manchester, Ohio, will relay one such story to attendees of the dinner meeting. Having practiced in Cincinnati and Manchester through the course of her professional career, Dr. Detmer is an avid world traveler, former bed and breakfast owner, and champion dog breeder. MENU: Garden salad, baked chicken breast, red skin potatoes, country style green beans, apple walnut cake and beverage. Wine orders, if desired, are separate and the responsibility of each individual. COST: $18.00 each prepaid for dinner for ASQ members and guests. You may attend the program at no cost, without dinner. However, registration is still required. REGISTRATION: Registration is required by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10. To the following address, please mail checks payable to "ASQ Scioto Valley Section" along with name, company and telephone number of each person attending. Because schools K through 16 are working to improve student performance, while at the same time improving their own operational efficiency. Parents are involved with schools and must also be equipped to support learning in the real world. Businesses are recognizing they can be effective partners with schools. Creating the system to achieve synergy between all these stakeholders requires a focus on outcomes and a realization that whole community collaboration truly is the multiplier in the excellence equation. This is the mission of the 10th NQEC. Conference partners include the American Society for Quality, the Association for Quality and Participation, the Quality Network, and the Ohio Department of Education. Generous support for this conference has been provided by Honda of America Mfg., Inc. Visit http://nqec.asq.org/sponsors/. Keynote, Dr. Loraine Monroe, CEO of the Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute, New York, NY will open the 10th NQEC by sharing her experiences with empowering teachers to be "creatively crazy" in order to turn around even the most destitute inner city schools. EduQuest—Views from the Baldrige Winners Highlighting the 10th NQEC is EduQuest--the presentation by the three Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winning schools on the first day. This mini conference within a conference features all three of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winners for 2001 in the Education category. Visit http://nqec.asq.org/sessions/sunday.html . Chugach Schools from Alaska, Pearl River School District from New York, and the University of Wisconsin - Stout will have representatives at the conference who will participate in panel discussions and share their unique approaches to implementing quality in schools. Plan to join your peers from throughout the United States and abroad at the 10th NQEC in Columbus, Ohio. Students, teachers, parents, business partners, and administrators will share their successes and explain how they overcame roadblocks. You'll hear personal experiences of continual improvement—in small steps and giant leaps. At NQEC, you'll be able to learn by sharing real stories. A desired minimum of five (5) students is usually required for a class to be scheduled, however, it is left to the discretion of the instructor if he/she will instruct fewer. It is possible that if a company decides to train near or above the minimum, the course could be offered at that facility as long as the instructor is willing and the facility has an adequate training facility. The instructors, with input from the students, will determine the days and times for each course. The section is also developing seminars conducted by certified professionals on such topics as SPC, ISO 9000, FMEA, PPAP and others.
