APRIL AND MAY ISO 9000:2000 POCKETGUIDE UNCLAIMED The ISO 9000:2000 Pocket guides for April and May were not claimed. A new number became effective on Wednesday afternoon, May 30. To find out if you have won this handy training and study tool, visit the ASQSVS web site. Somewhere on the web site there is an entry box asking that you enter your ASQ membership number. You will know immediately if you are a winner. The winning membership number each month is computer generated randomly from the ASQ roster of members formally affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section. You must be affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section to be eligible. Those who join (new or via transfer) the Section become part of the database of eligible winners, and could take possession of one of these pocket guides. The elected officers of the Section are not eligible for this monthly offering. Written by Dennis Arter and J. P. Russell, top ISO 9000 auditors and key participants in standards authoring bodies, this training and study tool discusses quality, its measurable characteristics, and the role of customer requirements in all quality management systems. Using the ISO 9001:2000 Draft International Standard as the model, each ISO clause (and its key concepts), the ISO process approach, and the Quality Management Principles are explained. REPORT FROM AQC Cindy Zollo-Davis, Bob Rinderman, Angi Pennington, John Nemeth, Doug Scott, John Cormier, and Bob Kefgen represented SVS at the ASQ Annual Quality Congress (AQC) held in Charlotte, NC May 5th through 9th. It was a very busy week starting on Saturday with the ASQ all day Section Leadership Training attended by Cindy, Angi and John Cormier. At the same time, Doug, Bob, and John Nemeth were being trained to be support staff to the Charlotte ASQ Section Host Committee. The ASQ Board of Directors meetings were also held on Saturday and Sunday, attended by Bob Rinderman. Angi participated in the Section Treasurer Training on Sunday. Throughout the Congress, SVS was prominent when awards and recognitions were being handed out. Bob Rinderman, in the company of his wife Sharon was honored at the Sunday “Fellows Brunch” when he was presented with his ASQ Fellow pin and plaque by ASQ president Greg Watson. Cindy Zollo-Davis, in the company of Mary Jo Mercier, Region 8 Director, accepted the SMP award to the Section from President Watson on behalf of Tim Matchett, SVS Section Chair during the annual Business Meeting. Bob Rinderman was introduced as one of ASQ’s new Fellows at the Monday Awards Luncheon attended by Cindy and John Nemeth. The Section received award recognition at the Investing in Quality reception Monday evening. At the Section Leadership reception, SVS was again recognized for receiving the SMP award. John Nemeth and Bob Rinderman represented ASQ member company US Enrichment Corporation at the Sustaining Member Luncheon. The Annual Banquet was held on Tuesday evening. In his first presidential speech, incoming President Tom Mosgaller reported on the state of the Society. During his address, Mr. Mosgaller recognized the "outstanding work of the members of the Scioto Valley Section of ASQ" and made special mention of the fact that SVS "attained the second level of the ASQ Section Management Program (SMP) in it's first year as a Subsection" and that "by the end of their second year of existence they not only became a full Section of ASQ but also attained the third and highest level (TQM) of the SMP!" President Mosgaller then added that he had "just learned that the Scioto Valley Section, currently in its first full year as a Section, has just added its 150th member this week!" At this point he requested and received a large round of applause for SVS. SANDY ENDICOTT NAMED SERVICE SPECIALIST AT MEAD Sandy Endicott has been named to the position of Service Specialist. EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION What is the function of the Placement Chair? The Placement Chair serves as a liaison between regional industries and ASQ Scioto Valley Section members who are seeking employment opportunities in the quality field. Although the principle focus of the Placement Chair is the Section Member who is seeking a new position due to loss of employment, the Chair may also serve the Section Member with interest in a career move to a more responsible position in the quality field with enhanced opportunity for personal and professional growth. Who is the current Placement Chair? The Scioto Valley Section Placement Chair is John Cormier, Business Development Manager with the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) in Piketon. John can be reached at: E-mail: cormierje@ports.usec.com Phone: (740) 897-2423 Fax: (740) 897-2459 How is information on regional career opportunities disseminated? As new regional job opportunities in the quality field are identified, these listings are posted to the ASQ Scioto Valley Section Web Site, and are routinely published in the monthly Scioto Valley Section Newsletter. In addition, the Placement Chair has established and maintains a comprehensive network of contacts with regional recruiters and area staffing professionals who may be looking for candidates for assignments in the quality field. Personal contact with the Placement Chair may produce worthwhile leads to the prospective job seeker. The Placement Chair also maintains a confidential database containing the names of interested Scioto Valley Section Members as well as the names of regional employers who staff positions in the quality field. Interested Scioto Valley Section members may post to this confidential database at any time, or may query the regional industry data file to focus their job search. No information on file in the database will be released without that individual’s written authorization. Additional information is also available at http://www.asq.org/net/career/. UPCOMING CONFERENCES SVS Fall Conference Planning continues for the first Annual SVS Fall conference. If you have not already done so, send Cindy Davis your completed Fall Conference questionnaire. If you did not receive a questionnaire contact Cindy at cldavis@bright.net. (Note the change of address. –ed.) MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR The ASQ fiscal year is winding down. Your Executive Committee is already thinking ahead to the 2001-2002 fiscal year that begins July 1. The group is planning another interesting schedule of monthly programs, a Fall Conference, certification preparatory courses based on member expressions of interest, and other meaningful services. You should have received your dues renewal notice from ASQ by now. We don't want to miss your involvement, so be sure and renew your membership before July 1. The membership of the Scioto Valley Section has reached 154 individuals. We began the fiscal year on July 1, 2000 with a total of 101 members, accounting for 28 with dues unpaid. By the end of December, we'd reached 131 active members. Interest in the Section has grown significantly in this calendar year, as we've conducted membership programs in new areas such as Gallipolis and Huntington. Members new to ASQ have joined us, as have others from nearby Sections. And we now have two Sustaining Member companies - Ahresty Wilmington Corporation, and the U. S. Enrichment Corporation. As of Thursday evening, May 31, Section member Brian Lanning will have completed a preparatory course for five of his SVS associates planning to sit for the Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) examination. They and several others will be taking the CQE, Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) and the new Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) examinations on Saturday, June 2. On a negative note, in both April and May, the owners of the membership numbers generated to win a copy of "The ISO Lesson Guide 2000: A Pocket Guide to Q9001:2000" failed to claim their booklets. As such, a new number became effective on Wednesday afternoon, May 30. This feature appears somewhere on the Scioto Valley Section's web site. Enter your membership number to see if you've won. A meaningful-size group of members and guests enjoyed a quality-related program and tour at the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District Headquarters on May 10. Sheryl Morris Meyer gave a wonderful presentation entitled "Performance Excellence in the Huntington District" following which members and guests toured the facility including the Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Center. Dinner followed the tour at the Four Seasons Restaurant. The Section extends its thanks to Sheryl for a very pleasant and informative evening. A tour of one of the Corps of Engineers lock and dam facilities could be one of our upcoming programs! During the evening, ASQ Region 8 Deputy Director Bob Rinderman presented Tony Dickens of Special Metals Corporation West Virginia with both CQA and CQM certifications. Bob also presented Arlie Henry of USEC with his CQM certification. Congratulations to Arlie, and to Tony for picking up these certifications within less than a year! On June, we'll be in the Chillicothe area for a "Quality in Health Care" program. The location is the Adena Regional Medical Center just north of Chillicothe. Ms. Dawn Allen, Director of Quality Management, will talk about "Exceptional Care at Adena Regional Medical Center." We don't schedule membership program meetings in July and August, and will begin anew in September. So I look forward to seeing you in June at the final program of this fiscal year. If any of you want to contact me after June 1, particularly during my last month as the Section Chair for 2000-2001, use the E-mail address cqp53@hotmail.com. I leave employment with the U. S. Enrichment Corporation June 1 to begin a new phase in life including a search in earnest for other employment, and a little bit of time in the interim to enjoy an "early retirement." Some other Section members join me in leaving the company that day, so please keep us all in mind as you may become aware of other opportunities. Please be assured I am committed to fulfilling my term through the end of June as your Section Chair, and to remaining involved in the management and direction of the ASQ Scioto Valley Section, supporting the efforts of your new Chair - Cindy Zollo-Davis - as she takes office effective July 1. See you June 12! Tim Matchett Section Chair 2000-2001 ASQ Scioto Valley Section
