ISO 9001:2000 POCKET GUIDE FEATURE RESTORED The feature on the Scioto Valley Section's web site that provides free copies of "The ISO Lesson Guide 2000: A Pocket Guide to Q9001:2000" to members has been restored. Visit the web site to see if you're a winner of a copy of this booklet that discusses the newly revised quality principles. Somewhere on the web site there's an entry box asking that you enter your ASQ membership number. If you're a winner, you'll know immediately. If not, you'll be asked to try again later. We have five more copies to be awarded before June 30, the end of the ASQ fiscal year. The copy for February goes to Mike MacCrae, a Quality Specialist for the U. S. Enrichment Corporation, Piketon. A copy for early March goes to Don Faust, a Work Control Manager for USEC. Previous winners have been Ted Watkins, Ferno-Washington; Kylea Barnes, Mead Paper; Stan Shope, Kal Kan Foods; and Brent Ray, Special Metals Corporation West Virginia (SMCWV). Winners need to come to a monthly membership dinner program meeting to pick up their pocket guides. The winning membership number each month is computer generated randomly from the ASQ roster of members formally affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section. You must be affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section to be eligible. Those who join (new or via transfer) the Section become part of the database of eligible winners, and could take possession of one of these pocket guides. The elected officers of the Section are not eligible for this monthly offering. Written by Dennis Arter and J. P. Russell, top ISO 9000 auditors and key participants in standards authoring bodies, this training and study tool discusses quality, its measurable characteristics, and the role of customer requirements in all quality management systems. Using the ISO 9001:2000 Draft International Standard as the model, each ISO clause (and its key concepts), the ISO process approach, and the Quality Management Principles are explained. NAME THAT NEWSLETTER As you may have noticed, most of the other ASQ Section newsletters have names. For example, the Columbus Section's newsletter is Quality Spirit, The Tower is the Cleveland newsletter, and Quality Comments belongs to Mid-Ohio. We think that it is time for the SVS newsletter to have a name, so we are sponsoring a contest to NAME THAT NEWSLETTER! Send your newsletter names to Bob Kefgen (rkefgen@zoomnet.net) or Tim Matchett (matchetttl@ports.usec.com). Entries will be published in the April newsletter. ANGELA PENNINGTON - ASQ SVS TREASURER JUNE 2001 - MAY 2002 Angi is a relative newcomer to the quality field. She was graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in June 1998. Immediately following graduation, she began working as a Quality Engineer at Mead Paper in Chillicothe. The following spring she was one of five participants in Mead's first wave of Six Sigma Black Belt training. Angi was certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt in September 1999. In June 2000, she was named Six Sigma Group Leader and gained broader responsibilities for Six Sigma implementation in Ohio Operations, as well as continuing to lead Six Sigma improvement projects. Angi has served the Sciioto Valley Section as Publicity Chair for two years and as Treasurer during this current year. Angi resides in Chillicothe with her husband, LeRoy. JO BIEHLE NAMED KENTUCKY TEACHER OF THE YEAR Harriet Jo Cornwell Biehle, wife of Scioto Valley Section Director Rich Biehle, was chosen as Kentucky's Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Department of Education. Biehle specializes in science at Worthington Elementary School near Greenup, Kentucky. She is a graduate of Marshall University and also holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati; a professional certificate from the University of Charleston (WV); and a leadership certification from Fresno Pacific College in California. Congratulations to Harriet Jo Cornwell Biehle, TEACHER OF THE YEAR! ONLINE QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM (The following program description is presented for information only. Its appearance in this newsletter does not represent an endorsement by either ASQ or SVS -- Editor) "Before getting my Master of Science in Quality Assurance, I was stuck behind a desk for 20 years. Now, I have doubled my pay and my job is more exciting." This is Luis Rodriguez speaking about the benefits of obtaining a MSQA degree online from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Rodriguez, who is a satellite underwriter for XL America Specialty Insurance Co., graduated in Spring 2000, and believes that the MSQA at Cal State Dominguez Hills has made himself more marketable. The online MSQA at Dominguez Hills celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2001. Five years is ancient in cyberspace, and Rodriguez and many others from around the globe have benefitted from their experience with the MSQA at Dominguez Hills. CSUDH is one of the best online schools in the U.S. (CSUDH is rated in the top 20 for best cyber-schools by Forbes magazine), and it takes pride in serving online students. The MSQA program was developed by experienced and dedicated professionals who have coordinated the curriculum to ensure course offerings meet the changing requirements for improved organizational competitiveness. Also, students in the Master of Science in Quality Assurance receive education in both the technical and administrative foundations of Quality Assurance. The MSQA program has helped students implement important changes in their profession. For example, three former MSQA online students were on a team at Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs. The team was awarded the coveted Malcolm Baldridge Award for quality in 1998, and the team credits their participation in the MSQA in helping achieve this honor. The Malcolm Baldridge award is given by the United States Department of Commerce for "Performance Excellence in Manufacturing or Services." These three former students are now part time instructors in the program. Jim Walden, Program Management Specialist on the Boeing A&M-Southern California Performance Excellence Team, is one of the MSQA graduates who has become an instructor in the MSQA program: "There are several dozen who attended the MSQA program, which was offered onsite here at Boeing in Long Beach. This program allowed us to improve our skills to become an effective deliverer of products and services." This is just another success story out of many related to the Quality Assurance Program at CSUDH. Much of the success of the MSQA program has been due to the excellent customer service at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Distance learning students will never set foot on the campus, and to support these students Dominguez Hills provides technical and academic support via phone, e-mail and the Web, giving students the sense of having a "university in their living room." Cal State Dominguez Hills has the largest distance-learning program in the CSU system. Other degree and certificate programs include Negotiation and Conflict Management, Nursing, Humanities, Assistive Technology, Purchasing, and Production and Inventory Control. For more information about these programs, call 877-GO-HILLS or visit the Web site at www.csudh.edu/extended. TRANSITIONS John Markiel, Division Manager, Production Engineering, QA and ISO for YSK, has been advanced to Senior Member status by ASQ. Congratulations, John! (Note her change of address -- Editor) ISO 9001:2000 QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BY BILL SOLLER) The new standard is finally released! Every 5 years or so, the ISO series of documents is reviewed and revised. The latest version was from 1994 and will still be in effect while you update to the new version. You typically have time to upgrade to the latest standard but you should check with your registrar to determine the policy that applies to your situation. This third edition of ISO 9001 replaces the 9002 and 9003 standards. Those organizations that have been registered to 9002 in the past would use this new standard by excluding certain requirements. The 1994 version has 20 elements while the new 2000 edition has only 5 major sections. The new clauses are: 4. Quality Management System, 5. Management Responsibility, 6. Resource Management, 7. Product Realization and 8. Measurement, analysis and improvement. Outline of the different Clauses Clause 4. Quality Management System outlines the general documentation requirements, control of documents and control of records. Clause 5. Management Responsibility outlines management commitment, customer focus, quality policy and quality planning. It also discusses responsibility, authority and communication along with management review of the organization's quality management system. Clause 6. Resource Management outlines the resources required, training, infrastructure and work environment. Clause 7. Product Realization outlines the quality planning requirements, determination of customer processes, product requirements, customer communication, design and development, purchasing, production and service, identification and traceability and calibration. Clause 8. Measurement, analysis and improvement outlines how the organization determines customer satisfaction, internal audits, process monitoring, nonconforming product control, continual improvement activities and corrective/preventive actions. The time was right to upgrade the ISO 9000 series of documents. There were many duplications in the previous standard, customer focus is emphasized and this edition clarifies and simplifies the requirements. This new standard also fits in nicely with Six Sigma business strategies. NOTE: Bill Soller is the Education Chair and an instructor for ASQ Columbus as well as the Quality Systems Manager for ABB Automation. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR This month's issue seems to have somewhat of a focus on ISO 9000:2000. Bob Kefgen, our Newsletter Editor, has excerpted from the Columbus Section's March newsletter the above article by Bill Soller. The feature on the Scioto Valley Section's web site that provides free copies of "The ISO Lesson Guide 2000: A Pocket Guide to Q9001:2000" to members has been restored after a problem took our web site down for a few days.. And we're very much looking forward to our April 10 dinner program meeting, at which a Senior Lead Auditor from DNV will provide for us a review of the ISO 9000 series standards with a focus on the recent changes. This will be our first Section visit to the Lewis Family Restaurant. The owner and our host, Margie Kiefer, is looking forward to our visit and has planned a very appealing buffet dinner for us. The conference room downstairs that we're using is so spacious that we'll have separate areas for dinner and presentations. We have a pre-dinner clinic scheduled on the subject of "Web Based Resources for Career Planning." The presenter is our Placement Chair and pending Section Chair-Elect John Cormier. Internet Liaison Wade Midkiff is providing assistance. I extend my belated thanks to John Markiel, YSK's Division Manager, Production Engineering, QA and ISO, who provided for us an overview of his plant's quality management program and strategy at our dinner program meeting on February 8. The location and meal that night also were very enjoyable - the Mead Conference Center in the Christopher Inn with dinner catered by Damon's Restaurant. We joined with our parent Columbus Section on March 15 for a tour of the Thomson Multimedia optical glass television picture tubes production facility south of Circleville, with dinner at J. R. Hooks Café following the tour. This was a highly informative, interesting and enjoyable evening, and we extend thanks to our tour hosts and guides - to quality staff members Bill Eckman for arranging and Tom McGuire for coordinating the tour; to general manager Randy Strutz for the overview presentation; and to tour guides Jim Gee, Jess Hopkins, Marc Kuttler, Emmitt Hempstead, Christine Hempstead, Gary Schmandt, Todd Davis, Bob Simpson, Tim Woodbridge and Judy DeLong. In conjunction with dinner at J. R. Hooks Café, I had the pleasure of presenting Kylea Barnes with her copy of the "The ISO Lesson Guide 2000: A Pocket Guide to Q9001:2000." Bob Rinderman and I then presented John Markiel with his ASQ Senior Member certificate, and Catherine Strobel with her Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certificate. There were 52 participants on the tour including 25 from the Scioto Valley Section, 15 from the Columbus Section, and our 12 hosts and tour guides from Thomson Multimedia. In May, we go to Huntington for a tour of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers' new Customer Service Center, hosted by our Section member Sheryl Morris Meyer. Dinner will be catered by a local restaurant. In June, we'll be in the Chillicothe area for a "Quality in Health Care" program. I can see that my term as Chair is starting to wind down, and I've very much appreciated the work and support of the other elected officers and committee chairs who have achieved success in programs, preparatory courses, certification, membership, publicity, use of our Section Management Plan as guidance, our Internet web site, and other areas. Your newly elected and upcoming fiscal 2001-2002 Chair, Cindy Zollo-Davis, has jumped even further into the management and direction of the Section and we can expect a dynamic upcoming year under her direction.
