Brent Ray, P.E., CQA/CQE, Plant Metallurgical Engineer at the Burnaugh (Kentucky) Facility with Special Metals Corporation West Virginia based in Huntington, won the first of two copies to be awarded for January. Stan and Brent visited the Scioto Valley Section's web site and entered their membership numbers to learn they had won. Their numbers were randomly generated by the Section's web server. With a week left in January, we decided to offer a second pocket guide for the month. Go enter your membership number to find out if you've won. You can visit the Scioto Valley Section's web site each month to see if you're a winner of a copy of this booklet that discusses the newly revised quality principles. Somewhere on the web site there's an entry box asking that you enter your ASQ membership number. If you're the winner, you'll know immediately. If not, you'll be asked to try again next month. Each winner needs to come to a monthly membership dinner program meeting to pick up his or her pocket guide. The winning membership number each month is computer generated randomly from the ASQ roster of members formally affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section. You must be affiliated with the Scioto Valley Section to be eligible. Those who join (new or via transfer) the Section during the year will become part of the database of eligible winners, and could take possession of one of these pocket guides. The elected officers of the Section are not eligible for this monthly offering. At least one pocket guide per month will be awarded through the end of June 2001. Written by Dennis Arter and J. P. Russell, top ISO 9000 auditors and key participants in standards authoring bodies, this training and study tool discusses quality, its measurable characteristics, and the role of customer requirements in all quality management systems. Using the ISO 9001:2000 Draft International Standard as the model, each ISO clause (and its key concepts), the ISO process approach, and the Quality Management Principles are explained. OVERVIEW OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT AT YSK IS ASQ SCIOTO VALLEY'S FEBRUARY PROGRAM; PRE-DINNER VIDEO FROM ASQ CHAIR-ELECT Representatives from YSK Corporation will provide an overview of the plant's quality management program and strategy on Thursday, February 8, for the Section's monthly dinner program meeting. The location is the Mead Conference Center at the Christopher Inn, just a few hundred yards west of North Bridge Street (Business Route 23), near the interchange with U. S. Route 35, Chillicothe. The speakers from YSK Corporation are Fred McFann, Senior Manager, Engineering Division; and John Markiel, Division Manager, Production Engineering, QA and ISO. They will provide a current perspective of YSK's quality management program, including management expectations, quality review and strategies. They will also discuss business changes since the Section's tour of the YSK facility one year ago and provide a look to the future. YSK is a high-volume machiner of automotive engine suspension and transmission components and in the process of becoming ISO 9002 certified. The Section also has scheduled a pre-dinner awareness session from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. The session will feature a 16-minute video message from Tom Mosgaller, President-Elect of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The video message entitled Building Quality Communities promotes thinking and acting systematically to create communities of quality where we live and work. "In today's market place 'great companies' need great communities," Mosgaller notes, "so we have to think about the whole community of quality including health care, education, government, etc. The tape shows the good that can result when we collaborate with other groups and individuals in our communities, and it shows how this is consistent with the strategic direction of ASQ." Those coming early for this pre-dinner clinic should arrive by 5:00 p.m. for registration, badging and seating. Following the pre-dinner clinic, registration and networking continue from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. Dinner is at 6:15 p.m., with a brief Section business meeting and program beginning at 7:00 p.m. All Scioto Valley Section affiliates, other local ASQ members and anyone interested in the Society or the subject of quality are encouraged to attend. Time indeed does fly when you're having fun! The first six months of fiscal 2000-2001 have been very busy, and very successful, for the Scioto Valley Section. After receiving its Section Charter on May 6, 2000, at the AQC, the Section began the fiscal year on July 1 with 101 active members. On the day before (June 30), the last day of the 1999-2000 fiscal year, it had 130 members. There were 29 non-renewals as of July 1. But the Section Executive Committee and others got busy! By the end of December 2000, the Section had climbed back to a level of 131 members. It added 32, while two moved away from the area and transferred to other Sections. Of the 32 added members, 14 were new to ASQ, two were members who returned to the Society after being unpaid for the entire 1999-2000 fiscal year, and four were transfers into Scioto Valley from other Sections. The remaining 12 were among the 29 members personally contacted by the Section Chair and other officers with a reminder that their dues were unpaid. In making these contacts, Section members expressed interest that these individuals remain involved in the Society and the Section. As a result, these 12 individuals renewed in August 2000 and later months. To date in calendar 2001, the Section has added seven additional members (two new to ASQ and five transfers from other Sections ) and lost one to a move from the area and transfer to another Section, for a current total of 137 members. These members come from throughout the Section's 16-county designated service area. Some recent additions come from Mason and Putnam counties in West Virginia, having found they can readily access SVS programs in Gallipolis, Jackson, Waverly and Chillicothe via U. S. Route 35, and in the Huntington area via State Route 2 or Interstate 64. In the fall, the Section planned and conducted certification preparatory classes leading up to the October CQM and the December CQE examinations. There were 11 completing the CQM course and 16 who completed the CQE class. The Section recently canvassed its membership and friends for expressions of interest in potential upcoming classes. The second examination site at Ashland Community College, Ashland, Kentucky, is now fully operational and was used for the December session. For the 1999-2000 fiscal year, chaired by Bob Rinderman, the Section achieved all three levels of the Quality Management Plan. This feat is particularly noteworthy since not all ASQ sections are able to perform at this level. The third level, Total Quality, was completed early in the 2000-2001 fiscal year. I extend the Section's thanks to John Nemeth, who has volunteered to assume the responsibilities of Education Chair for the Section in addition to his duties as Historian and Section Photographer; and to Sandy Endicott, who has volunteered to serve as Arrangements Chair in addition to her role as the Section Program Chair. We look forward to working with John to continue the developing SVS tradition of top-notch professional training opportunities; and with Sandy as the Scioto Valley continues a three-year history of offering a schedule of meaningful monthly programs for its members. The slate of officers for the upcoming fiscal year beginning July 1 is now in place. The 2000-2001 annual meeting and election of officers was January 9 in conjunction with the quality program and tour of the Rockwell Automation facility at Gallipolis. Following the Treasurer's report, section officers for 2001-2002 were elected as nominated. SVS officers beginning in July are as follows: Chair - Cynthia Zollo-Davis, Quality Consultant, Davis & Davis Associates Chair-Elect - John Cormier, Manager, Field Services Group, U. S. Enrichment Corporation Vice Chair - Wade Midkiff, RF Engineering Manager, Horizon PCS Secretary - R Douglas Scott, Consultant, Retired Treasurer - Angela Pennington, Six Sigma Black Belt, Mead Paper A total of 70 people including SVS members, members of the Mid-Ohio Valley Section and student guests from the University of Rio Grande enjoyed an excellent tour of the motion control electric motor manufacturing facility preceded by an overview from Plant Manager Randy Finney and followed by dinner courtesy of Rockwell Automation management. Highlights of the tour included several examples of Continuous Improvement teams working to increase quality and efficiency. The Section extends its thanks to Mr. Finney, Quality Manager Mr. Harold Ault, and the 15 other members of the Rockwell Automation staff who so graciously provided this program for local members of ASQ. Upcoming on February 8, management of YSK Corporation will provide a current perspective of the company's quality management program, including management expectations, quality review and strategies. I look forward to seeing you there, at the Mead Conference Center in the Christopher Inn, Chillicothe. Timothy L.
