Lanning This is the fourth in a series of ASQ SVS newsletter articles on the benefits and applications of Six Sigma. The first two articles discussed the backbone of Six Sigma which involves defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling the process of interest (abbreviated DMAIC for short). The third article compared and contrasted the Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) with the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB). This fourth article will provide a Six Sigma-friendly technique for converting a failure rate into the proverbial sigma quality level. Six Sigma is a powerful technique for greatly improving your overall quality level associated with a process, product, and service. However, at the heart of a successful Six Sigma project is the quantification of the "higher is better" sigma quality level. Non-statistically minded managers will know the pre-Six Sigma and post-Six Sigma "failure rate" of a critical process, but may not the pre and post "sigma quality level. This latter metric is the current buzz because it describes the quality of all processes using a single number. There are several options available for quantifying the sigma level. The most traditional is to consult a table that lists a column for failure rate (known in the Six Sigma world as defects per million (DPM)) and a column for the equivalent sigma quality level. An excellent reference is Quality Council of Indiana CSSBB primer, section XII, p. 3. Tables are user-friendly, quick, yet may not contain your exact DPM requiring one interpolate (i.e., approximate). A better approach is to use a Six Sigma formula. The formula does not require computer software, such as Excel or statistical. You can simply work it out with the aid of a calculator. I will provide two examples (one based on a scary fact about hospital tools left in surgery patients). Sigma Quality Level Formula. Schmidt and Launsby(1) report that the sigma quality level (with the 1.5 sigma shift) can be approximated by: Sigma Quality Level = 0.8406 + (29.37-2.221xln(DPM))E1/2 [ed. note: The expression being added is the square root of (29.37-2.221xln(DPM)) ] Example (taken from QCI CSSBB primer(2)). If a process were producing 80 defects/million (DPM = 80), what would be the sigma quality level? Sigma quality = 0.8406 + (29.37-2.221xln(DPM))E1/2 = 0.8406 + (29.37-2.221xln(80))E1/2 = 0.8406 + 4.4314 = 5.272 Looking this up in a table (using interpolation) is about 5.3. Example. A true story recently appeared in a local newspaper entitled, "Surgical tools left in 1,500 patients a year, study says" (January 16, 2003, paper unknown). The article claimed medical instruments are left in 1500 surgical patients a year (defects) compared with 28 million operations annually in the U.S. DPM = 1,000,000x (1500/280M) = 53.6, or (using table and interpolating) a process sigma level of 5.4. The equation above produces a sigma quality level equal to 0.8406 + (29.37-2.221xln(53.6))E1/2 = 5.37. This indicates the nations hospitals are not operating at a 6 sigma quality based on this specific article. Interesting what powerful and important information a simple Six Sigma formula can provide! I would recommend simply entering this formula into an Excel spreadsheet, or programmable calculator and store for future use. ______________________ 1 Schmidt, S.R. & Launsby, R.G. (1997). AUTHOR STATEMENT: I have greatly enjoyed writing these Six Sigma articles for fellow ASQ SVS members. My goal was to educate you on the fundamentals and importance of Six Sigma via a series of short, informative articles. I hope this has been accomplished. This will be the final installment of "I Dig My Six Sigma". However, your comments are more than welcome and may result in a future Six Sigma article. If you dig Six Sigma and are interested in it's massive quality and cost improvement capabilities, you should contact Six Sigma Black Belt Brian Lanning at the address below. Brian is a Statistical Specialist with the United States Enrichment Corporation in Piketon, Ohio, and President of Tri-Stat Consulting specializing in Six Sigma Quality, Quality Engineering, and Applied Statistics. Brian holds a M.S. in Statistics and ASQ certifications as Six Sigma Black Belt and Quality Engineer. Brian is also an ASQ Certified Instructor for the ASQ Scioto Valley Section. Why become a Senior Member of ASQ? Achieving Senior membership in ASQ is an indication of professional growth and accomplishment in the quality profession or the allied arts and sciences. There are many members of the Scioto Valley Subsection who may be eligible for advancement to the elected grade of ASQ Senior Member. Senior members enjoy a number of advantages and the upgrade is easy to accomplish. Senior members receive all of the regular member benefits plus: · A Senior member certificate, card, and lapel pin. · Recognition of your achievement through an announcement in Quality Advocate, ASQ's monthly newsletter. · Special Senior member name badge at ASQ events that you attend. · Your choice of one extra benefit journal, one Division, or an additional section free of charge as part of your Senior member benefit package. What are the requirements? 1. Have ten years of active professional experience. Up to four years of the requirement may be satisfied by graduation from an accredited institution. 2. Be a Member in good standing for at least one year prior to the date of application. 3. Have qualified in one of the ways described below: a. Conducted quality-related engineering, inspection or audit, or statistical work, or applying the methods and principles of quality on the job for at least two years. b. Teaching quality or related arts and sciences at an accredited institution for at least two years. c. Being a Senior Member or comparable grade in a recognized professional engineering, technical, or scientific society." d. Currently holding an ASQ certification that requires recertification. The cost of Senior Membership is $99.00 per year, only $17.00 more than regular member grade ASQ membership. The cost of the membership pin combined with the cost of the quarterly journal subscription included with Senior membership would cost from $50.00 to $80.00 extra for a regular member. The Senior Membership application can be found on ASQNet at: http://www.asqnet.org/members/leadership/mbrapp/index.html What do I do if I'm interested in becoming a Senior Member? Contact your SVS Examining Chair, Brian Lanning, it is my job to assure that each regular member has the opportunity to advance his or her membership to the Senior level. I will be happy to talk with you, get answers to your questions and to assist you in any way that I can to achieve and enjoy the benefits of Senior membership. I encourage you to contact me, or any other member of the SVS Executive Committee, for information and an Application for Advancement to the Grade of Senior Member. Applications must be submitted to me for review and approval and subsequent submittal to ASQ National Headquarters for National Examining Committee approval.
