Kefgen (rkefgen@zoomnet.net) In this Issue: MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR FEBRUARY MEETING – “QUALITY IF THE FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY” - FEBRUARY 7TH EDUCATION INFORMATION SOUGHT CERTIFICATION PREPARATORY COURSES PLANNED EXAMINATION PROCTORS NEEDED PROGRAM SCHEDULE FOR 2002 **************************************************************************** MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR February 2002 Greetings to all ASQ SVS members and friends. The month of February promises to be an interesting one from all indications, not only do we have the Olympic Winter Games coming up, but the Enron Collapse and senate investigation/hearings commencing soon….only joking…most of us will watch replays of the games and endless replays of talking heads and appropriate sound bites from Capital Hill. So, to distract you from the obviously mundane and boring, we have a very unique opportunity in having our next monthly dinner meeting located in the scenic Rio Grande/Gallipolis area, with a topic near and dear to all of us who frequent restaurants...Quality in the Food Service Industry! (see registration form within newsletter). Those of us who deal in quantum physics, pharmaceuticals, heavy manufacturing and industry may think, what is so great about this topic? Why would I want to attend this session? Think BEST INDUSTRY PRACTICES! We all glean from the best and brightest in the business world, utilizing a spark or two of that energy and magic to use within the confines of our daily lives, whether it is in a research lab, manufacturing cell, drive-thru restaurant, ICU unit or paper mill. Those of us who are dinosaurs within the Quality and Operations Management movement remember when JIT was the hot ticket in town...and still is when used properly, but also take the time to reflect on one of the best local success stories in Ohio….Wendy’s…when you think JIT. Huh? Yep….a “best industry practice” utilized extremely well within the fast food universe. One Wendy’s location in Ohio recently won a competition for fastest time from order to pick-up….a mere 34 seconds! Now that’s fast (er, just-in-time), and no the order wasn’t sitting under a warmer waiting to be picked up. This event was staged as part of an internal store/regional competition, and was also graded on freshness, presentation, among other criteria. So think of the innovation, customer service and quality standards that another Ohio favorite son has given us, Bob Evans Farms in particular. I hope you take the time this week to attend this session and think “best industry practice”. Remember that there are other equally relevant and “delicious” Ohio borne businesses we would love to hear from and see in the future. How about Donato’s, Smuckers, Marzetti’s, Anthony Thomas Candies, Esther Price Candies….I could go on but that would make me hungry. In other ASQ SVS news, our annual election of 2002-2003 officers was held at the January dinner meeting in Huntington, W.Va. I am proud to announce the following talented and gracious individuals have been elected to serve: Section Chair - John Shewbrooks Chair Elect - Tim Matchett Vice Chair - Sheryl Morris Meyer Vice Chair - George Smith Treasurer - R. Douglas Scott Secretary - Pamela Sperling Individual profiles on each will follow in future issues of the Scioto Valley Voice. Congratulations or Sincere Sympathy to all, depending on your viewpoint. Again, I am only joking! As a final thought, take the time to remember and continue to support one of the greatest self-made men I ever knew, Dave Thomas. Having known Dave and family in years past, he truly was sincere in his beliefs and genuine in his desire to deliver the “best burger in the biz”. The boating trips on Lake Erie, Catawba Island and Cedar Point were the best. Cynthia L. EXAMINATION PROCTORS NEEDED In order to provide improved service to all of our members, taking future certification examinations, we are expanding the number of examination centers from one to four over the next 12 months. Our plans are to have centers in the Chillicothe, Portsmouth, Jackson and Ashland/Huntington areas. To accomplish this plan, we need to expand the number of qualified examination proctors we have from three to 5 or more. Top serve as a proctor, you have to possess a current ASQ certification in any area, and be willing to work approximately 4-5 hours each quarter. Proctors receive .5 RU for each examination they participate in, and 1.5 RU for being an active member of the SVS Certification Committee. The only limitation being, that you may not sit for any exam within 12 months of proctoring that specific exam. For example an individual planning to sit for the CQE examination may not proctor the CQE exam for 12 months prior to sitting for the examination. Examination dates for CY 2002 are: March 2, 2002 June 1, 2002 October 19, 2002 December 7, 2002 If you are interested in volunteering to become an examination proctor, please contact George Smith at gw1smith@bright.net or John Nemeth at jenemeth@ra.rockwell.com or nbsoncst@adelphia.net.
